DCNR highlights infrastructure needs in state parks and forests

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary visited Shawnee State Park in Bedford County on Wednesday to discuss how federal pandemic recovery funds could be used to update and repair infrastructure within state parks and forests. When most people visit a state park or forest, they think of camping and hiking, but maybe not the infrastructure it takes to create a great experience in a park. So that's why DCNR says it's important to emphasize the infrastructure needs within state parks and forests.

Old Bedford Village gains national attention after historic rifles were stolen

BEDFORD - Old Bedford Village has gained national attention after sharing on Facebook that six of its historic guns were stolen. David Petit is the groundskeeper and a blacksmith at the village. He said sometime after midnight Dec. 14, someone broke into multiple historic buildings, including the General Store and the Rifle House. "We've lost a piece of Bedford County history," Petit said. Nothing was reported missing from the other buildings -- only the six rifles that were stored in a glass case for display.

Police confident of eventual arrest in mall shooting

MONROEVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Authorities are expressing confidence about an eventual arrest in a shooting outside a western Pennsylvania mall that prompted an evacuation Monroeville police say two groups of four to five males began fighting at about 8 p.m. Friday, and the brawl spilled outside, where one person pulled a gun and fired about 10 shots. No injuries were reported. The mall, about 17 miles (27.36 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh was placed on lockdown and later evacuated.

Toys R Us to close its doors

One of the country's most well-known toy store chains is closing its doors. Toys R Us is exploring a plan to liquidate the company, closing hundreds of stores and laying off some 30,000 people. The retailer announced Wednesday that it filed to liquidate and close all its 735 stores nationwide. The company's CEO saying in a statement that, "This is a profoundly sad day for us as well as the millions of kids and families who we have served for the past 70 years.

Indiana 18-year-old charged for threatening Homer-Center School District

Indiana County, PA (WJAC) — State police say an 18-year-old Indiana County man was arrested Thursday after he reportedly made a threat towards the Homer-Center School District. Troopers say Spencer Baker, of Indiana, was charged with one felony count of making terroristic threats after he reportedly sent a Snapchat video to a Homer-Center student that showed him holding a shotgun. Investigators add that the video also reportedly indicated that he was traveling to the school with the weapon.

Local tattoo shop raises money for family in need

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Total Commitment Tattooing in Johnstown was packed Saturday with people making some very permanent decisions. But the ink didn't just change their lives. It made a difference for a local family in need. The tattoo shop held its annual Tats for That event, and all of the money made Saturday went to the Lawrey family this year. At just 3 days old, Easton Lawrey began to have seizures and suffered a pediatric stroke, causing major, long-term health complications.

Meta oversight board weighing use of 'from the river to the sea,' seeking community input

WASHINGTON (TND) — An oversight board for social media giant Meta is seeking user input on whether posts with the phrase "from the river to the sea" should be permitted on Facebook, the company told The National Desk (TND) Wednesday. The phrase is considered antisemitic by the Anti-Defamation League and was included in the 1988 original governing charter of Hamas, the terrorist group which invaded Israel on Oct. 7. House lawmakers in April also condemned the use of the phrase despite 43 Democrats dissenting.

Penn State Board approves drastic changes to Greek Life

UNIVERSITY PARK - The Penn State Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new comprehensive plan for Greek Life at Penn State University Friday. President Eric Barron announced several major changes to Greek Life following the death of Timothy Piazza. Barron announced the following: -University control of the fraternity and sorority organizational misconduct and adjudication process: -Hazing that involves alcohol, physical abuse, or any behavior that puts a student’s mental or physical health at risk will result in swift, permanent revocation of University recognition for the chapter involved.

Pennsylvania teen girl kicked out of her prom for wearing a suit instead of a dress

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A high school student in Harrisburg said was kicked out of her prom because she was wearing a suit and not a dress. According to Aniya Wolf she is not transgender. She said she is a lesbian who doesn't want to wear girly clothes. The Wolf family said a last minute email explained girls had to wear a dress to prom. The holidays kick off in Ebensburg with Dickens of a Christmas weekend

The 17th annual Dickens of a Christmas kicked off this weekend in Ebensburg. The weekend is organized by the Ebensburg Main Street Partnership and is inspired by the borough's Victorian architecture, like the jail and the courthouse. This Christmas celebration features many events such as a parade, a light up show and dozens of other festivities like craft shows, and even a Santa pub crawl.
