Town hall held to discuss financial solutions, potential closure of Port Matilda EMS

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A town hall meeting was held in Centre County Tuesday evening, at the Huston Township Community Center, to discuss the funding issue affecting Port Matilda EMS. The EMS service is asking for more financial support from the municipalities they serve. Officials say grant money they just received cannot be used for payroll purposes. "In the shorter term, we have moved ahead our full year's payment to the EMS so they're going to be getting their full year's donation up front, so hopefully they'll be able to keep the doors open longer.

Cambria County nurse receives award for outstanding patient care

A Cambria County nurse received an excellence award Friday. DaVita Kidney Care presented Abby Salvador with a Daisy Award for extraordinary nurses at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center's Atrium. Salvador was nominated for the award by fellow coworkers and patients for her outstanding and compassionate care. She moved to the area from the Philippines and had to work hard to adjust from her training there to be successful now. Salvador said, “I’m really proud and thankful and grateful for my team, because I wouldn’t be doing this without my teammates; with our managers, with our heads, and, along with our clinical coordinator teammates, along with my fellow Filipinos; without them, I wouldn’t be here.

Former PA funeral director stole nearly $900Kfrom customers

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (WJAC) — The former director of a Pennsylvania funeral home allegedly stole nearly $900,000 from customers who thought they were pre-paying for the burial of family members. William O'Leary, of Upper Darby, allegedly took the money over a period of several years while he ran the O'Leary Funeral Home in Springfield. His live-in girlfriend, Mary Alice Kelly, who once worked at the funeral home, was also charged in the scheme.

Pennsylvania Game Commission approved new changes to hunting and trapping season

Johnstown, Pa — Hunters, listen up! There have been some changes to the upcoming hunting and trapping season. 6 News spoke to an official from the Pennsylvania Game Commission as well as the Assistant Manager of a local hunting shop and although they say there's not much different from last season to this one – the biggest change is how hunters can purchase their antlerless deer license. “The biggest change for hunters and our deer hunters in particular is the change in the way that antlerless deer licenses will be obtained in the coming license year,” said Travis Lau, the Communication Director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

HARRISBURG, Pa (WJAC) — Pennsylvania State Police on Thursday announced the death of Trooper Dung X. Martinez, who passed away after being hospitalized. Trooper Martinez, 57, was assigned to Troop T in the King of Prussia area. "Our department expresses deep sorrow for the sudden loss of a colleague and friend," said Colonel Evanchick. "We wish Trooper Martinez's family and friends comfort and peace during this difficult time and ask Pennsylvanians to keep them in their thoughts.

Reitz Theatre receives $300,000 grant to make improvements

DuBois, PA — The Reitz Theater was the only building to survive the Downtown DuBois fire in the late 1880s. Since then, Culture Resources Incorporated purchased the building and started the Reitz Theater back in the 1990s. Recently they were awarded $300,000 from the Department of Economic Development for this theater. "They gave us an additional $300,000 on our own we had raised about $140,000 so we're using all those funds together to do some improvements on the building and also to build our addition,"

Steelers' training camp returning to Latrobe

Latrobe, PA (WJAC) — The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Wednesday that they will be returning to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe for training camp. The team has not held training camp at the college for the past two seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Coroner IDs victims of fatal Indiana Co. fire

Indiana County, PA (WJAC) — Indiana County coroner Jerry Overman has identified the victims of Saturday's fatal house fire in East Wheatfield Township. Officials say 81-year-old Merle Robinson and 75-year-old Janet Bloom both died from "inhalation of combustible products," otherwise known as smoke inhalation, after being trapped inside the residence early Saturday morning. Investigators say entry into the home was "not possible" when firefighters arrived on scene. Officials say after the flames were extinguished, firefighters recovered both Robinson and Bloom's bodies.

Huntingdon County woman exposed as a fraudulent lawyer sentenced to prison

HUNTINGDON - A Huntingdon County lawyer, uncovered as a fraud, learned her fate in court Tuesday. Investigators said Kitchen had been practicing law without a license and now she'll face time in prison. Kitchen was sentenced to from two to five years in a state prison was on the higher end of the sentencing guidelines. According to the judge there were several reasons for this harsh punishment and he said "
