Lieutenant governor opens State House pool for use by kids

FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor is opening the pool in the official residence he doesn't use to children who typically wouldn't have access to one. Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman announced Friday the new access to the pool at the State House. The residence is on National Guard property, about 25 miles from Harrisburg. Fetterman's wife, Gisele, will run a program to teach water safety and coordinate wider use of the 30-by-40-foot pool.

Releases from local prison pose "risk to community"

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) -- More inmates from the Blair County Prison are walking free after the courts granted bail reductions to help cut down the prison population. The prison has been operating with around 220 inmates, releasing roughly one-third of its normal population since the start of the pandemic. A decision by the Blair County Court of common Pleas allowed for the release of inmates charged with violent crimes, including one waiting to be tried for attempted homicide.

State College contractor claims restitution payments are delayed after company was hacked

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — There are more problems for one of Centre County's largest employers, who has already been ordered to pay more than $20 million in court ordered restitution. After Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. was ordered to pay the restitution stemming from a criminal case that accused the company of illegally diverting pension money and other wage benefits, a group of former employees filed a class action case claiming Hawbaker failed to make required contributions to 401K retirement, and other benefit plans.

700-pound bear taken in 5th best bear harvest ever in Pennsylvania

Harrisburg, PA — Its that time of the year... the 2021 Pennsylvania bear hunters report was released from the Pennsylvania Game Commission. A 722-pound male taken with a shotgun on Dec. 4, in Letterkenny Township in Franklin County, by Wade Glessner, of Shippensburg, was the biggest bear taken last year.. The PA Game Commission says the heaviest bear ever taken in Pennsylvania was an 875-pounder harvested in 2010 in Middle Smithfield Township, Pike County.

Coroner IDs victim of fatal crash on Route 322

2nd UPDATE |Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Centre County coroner Scott Sayers has identified the victim of Wednesday's fatal crash on Route 322 in the Boalsburg area. Authorities say 67-year-old Toni Freeman, of Bellefonte, was killed when her SUV crossed into the opposite lane of travel and struck a tractor-trailer head-on. Sayers says Freeman suffered blunt force trauma to the head and her death has been ruled accidental. The crash closed a section of the Mounty Nittany Expressway for several hours.

Off-duty Philly cop shot while helping fellow officer

PHILADELPHIA, Pa (AP) — An off-duty Philadelphia police lieutenant was shot and wounded early Friday while trying to help another officer apprehend an armed man. Authorities say Lt. Robert Friel underwent surgery for a leg wound and was expected to make a full recovery. The 50-year-old armed man, whose name has not been released, had been reported missing late Thursday by a caller who also said the man had guns and had been using drugs.
