Family Services Inc. hosts annual 'Day of Giving' event

ALTOONA, Pa (WJAC) — Family Services Inc., along with radio station WRTA-FM, held their 10th annual “Drive-by Day of Giving” on Friday at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Union Avenue in Altoona. Family Services runs several community service organizations, such as domestic violence and sexual assault support, and homeless assistance. "The money that is raised today, none of it goes to overhead, none of it goes to operating expenses, it all goes back to families in the community,” said Lisa Hann, executive director of Family Services, Inc.

Penn Highlands Health ordered to pay over $700K to settle false claims allegations

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Penn Highlands Health has been ordered to pay $735,000 to the federal government to settle false claims. The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that Penn Highlands hospitals, including DuBois medical center, agreed to the payment. The DOJ says the health system paid two doctors, who weren’t employed by them at the time, through submissions of false claims to Medicare and Medicaid. The release from the agency says the violations happened from 2009 to 2012 and was brought to its attention by a whistle blower.

Dog park risks closure after founder and president passes away

Somerset County, PA — Jager and Friends Dog Park is a non-profit organization and corporation, in Somerset County. For 13 years its founder Jim Atchison, treasurer Judy Rach, and others managed and maintained the property for the public. Rach says it began with the help of other community members, turning it from a baron parcel of pavement to one of the top 10 dog parks in Pennsylvania. That's according to the PhillyByte magazine.

DOJ files sexual harassment lawsuit against Falls Creek rental property owner

Federal authorities announced Friday that a sexual harassment lawsuit has been filed against the owner of several rental properties in the Falls Creek area. Officials say Timothy Britton, the operator of Britton Enterprises LLC, which also goes by the name “Tim’s Apartments,” is alleged to have sexually harassed and retaliated against female tenants for several years. The lawsuit claims that Britton has repeatedly made unwanted sexual comments towards female tenants, inappropriately touched them and requested sexual contact from them.

Juniata Valley, Williamsburg to merge football programs

Juniata Valley and Williamsburg have both confirmed to 6 Sports that they plan on merging their respective football programs prior to the upcoming high school football season. "Juniata Valley School District is excited for this unique opportunity to have Williamsburg High School football players join our football program. PA park manager rescues bear cub with its head stuck in container

Cross Fork, PA — A woman was in the right place at the right time when she came to the rescue of a bear cub in Pennsylvania. Sarah Lindgren, who is a park manager, was driving through Cross Fork last weekend when she spotted a cub with a plastic container on its head. She says she actually thought it was dead when she first saw it. It took about 10 seconds to free the cub, which eventually climbed into a tree.
